How to Make a Comfortable Home for Your Dog

Few things are as exciting as welcoming a dog into a new home. However, it can also be a stressful time as you and your pup get used to the new environment and, if the dog is new to your family, each other. That's why it's so important to establish a comfortable home for your fur baby. Whether they're a little pup, an older rescue, or you're simply moving house, here are some simple starters for helping your dog adjust to a new place.

Somewhere to feel safe

First and foremost, it's important to set up a safe and secure space your dog can retreat to when they feel uncomfortable or scared. New sights and sounds, the presence of unfamiliar people like tradies and removalists, and even the home itself can make your pup want to hide away.

So what's a dog's safe space look like? If you know what makes them relax - going outside, going into a quiet room, tucking themselves away in a dark corner etc. - make sure they can access that space as they please. If your dog is new, a space with familiar toys, a blanket, or something else that smells like them is a great place to start. Set it up in the area of the home that's likely to remain most quiet and keep it there so your fur baby knows where to flee when they feel afraid.

Somewhere to rest

As your dog settles into their new home and new routines, they'll want a place to rest without being disturbed. The area should be warm but able to be protected from harsh sunlight, dry, clean, and quiet.

A suitable bed is also critical to ensure maximum comfort. Click here to find out what type of bed best suits your dog.

Somewhere to play

This one's not only important for your pup. Establishing an area for play helps keep the house clean and free of hazards for you and for them.

Set up a space that's clear of obstructions where your dog knows they can go to play. Keep their toy box there, with only a few toys left out to keep them engaged and entertained without tearing up the house (soft toys are great, tug ropes, not so much).

Ultimately, the goal is to establish a home your dog feels comfortable and (relatively) in control of, without having them overtake the space or be constantly on edge. As with all things pup, patience is key, and so is love. Be patient, be kind, and before long, your family will find total comfort in their home.
